Manuela Picq

Facing travel ban, detention

Academic and Indigenous rights defender

Manuela L Picq is an academic and a political activist, working for the promotion of equality for indigenous people in Ecuador. According to her testimony, she was arrested in 2015 for being part of a protest against the law for the indefinite re-election of the president. She was beaten by the police and lost the view in one eye. Although police never communicated the formal charges against her, her visa was revoked and she was transferred to a clandestine detention centre for immigrants. After five days of detention, a judge determined that her arrest had been illegal, but Manuela's visa request was still denied. She had to leave the country and she has not been allowed to come back ever since.
